Welcome to the DDL Pooch-Intelligencer!

If your pooch is still ‘sweating’ the heat with a heavy coat, check out our new LAUBE DeSHEDDERS! They work like magic on long and short haired dogs, removing what you will later find on your Kitchen floor. It’s a great way to keep your pup well groomed without having to visit the groomer every month. Not to mention, it’s fun to do and your pooch will love you for it!

Elise with her Weim Lily,

We now have a client feedback survey online. Please let us know how we are doing and we’ll throw you a bone!

Our NORMS A.R.F. Benefit is coming up and we’d LOVE your support on September 10. We still have outstanding medical bills From the 64 rescued (and placed) Hurricane Katrina dog victims. Nothing is sweeter than to see a dog survive catastrophe, and then find themselves comfortable, loved and in a warm, stable environment. Please join us on September 10th to make donations and have a beer for the sake of the pooch!.

We have new puppy classes with our expert trainers Cora and Amy if your little one (or you) need some direction. Check out our new Dog Training Schedule and make a reservation! We also have Barking Buddha Basics with Brenda on September 13th for those that want to do Yoga and bond with your pooch!

DDL recently lost a few of our furry family members and wanted to take a moment to remember them.

In the last newsletter we started up a new feature called "Questions for Cora" where you can ask our own training expert how to fix some of your pooches bad habits. Below Cora has replied to a question about a begging pooch.

Dear Cora,
When my husband and I start our dinner, we give our dog a treat and he behaves fine during our meal, but when we have guests for dinner, my dog keeps begging for food and jumping to our guests. What can I do?

Thank you,
Yuko

------------------

Yuko,

Thank you so much for submitting your question! It sounds like you and your husband have already established the rules and boundaries with your dog, but that he is testing your guests to see what he can get away with. If they are touching him at all or even looking at him when he is begging/jumping up it will only encourage this behavior. It is important to keep your pup on leash so you can correct and control him. It would be best if you could teach him an alternate behavior when your guests come over, such as "go to your rug" or even a solid "down-stay". This way you can praise him when he is on his "rug" rather than yelling at him for harassing your guests. It will take practice and patience, but you will love the results and so will your pooch! If you have difficulty teaching him these commands please contact me to set up a training session and we'll work on it together.

Thank you again and please keep the great training questions coming!

Did you know that our daycare packages don't expire?

That's right. Unlike other dog daycare facilities, when you purchase a 5, 10, or 20 day package with Downtown Dog Lounge that package will never expire. If you regularly use DDL, the packages are definitely the way to go. You will save a ton of money. Plus, if you purchase a Monthly Unlimited or Yearly Unlimited package you get overnight boarding for just $20 a night.

Have 2 dogs? When you purchase your first package at full price, your second dog can get their package for HALF-OFF!

Bordetella, commonly known as Kennel cough, is a respiratory illness that is best controlled by giving dogs regular vaccinations against it. The vaccine is administered by simply squirting a serum into a dog’s nasal passages. It is typically done once a year if a client requests it, but it is not in the “core” regimen of vaccines.

Since the Bordetella vaccine may wear off after a few months, boarding and even dog daycare facilities usually require it to be given every 6 months. Dogs that are exposed to lots of friends, and are kept in kennel situations where there may be decreased ventilation and increased stress, are more prone to contracting Kennel cough.

This vaccine is considered very safe, and over-vaccination is generally not a concern. Though it may seem inconvenient to vaccinate for Bordetella every 6 months, it is not as expensive as other vaccines, and most dog owners and care-givers agree that this ounce of protection is well worth it.

Is your pooch up to date on their Bordetella? If not, have UrbanVet help protect your pooch!
