    Grooming & Health Update
    Paw Shaving

    The benefits of “Pad Shaves”

Many of you have had your dogs pads shaved and didn't even know it! Every dog who is lucky enough to make it into the grooming salon at DDL has been treated to a pad shave. Most dogs that grow long hair also grow excessive hair between their toes and around their pads.

We shave pads for several reasons:
to remove any mats that might be forming, to remove debris that might be stuck under hair, to reduce the amount of dirt attached to the bottom of dogs feet and to lower the changes of something sharp getting stuck in their paws. Shaved pads Track much less dirt & dander into your car and home! , and dogs are less likely to lick shaved paws.

Many different breeds can benefit from this grooming service such as Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Australian Shepperd's, Border Collies, Spaniels and many others.
A DDL pad shave is a commonly requested service. It takes about 10 minutes and can be added to any bath service for just $10.
Call 206-282-3647 for Elliott or 206-441-6160 for Bell Street appointments & Capitol Hill opening April/May 2007.

    GIARDIA

A common problem seen in the pacific northwest is Giardia. Especially in western Washington. The reason for this is the wet environment and temperate climate, which allows the parasite to thrive. Giardia is a single celled parasite that affects the gastro-intestinal system. It can cause a wide range of symptoms. These can include severe diarrhea, mild diarrhea that comes and goes, vomiting and lethargy, and sometimes no symptoms at all. Dogs that are infected but show no clinical symptoms make the spread of the parasite hard to control. Also it is important to remember that it is possible for giardia to be spread to people.

Dogs can pick up giardia from other dogs that are infected, from stagnant water (i.e. puddles, water bowls at your favorite coffee joint, ponds, lakes), and from contaminated grass and soil. Wildlife such as raccoons can also spread giardia so back yards can also be affected. This parasite is introduced into the environment by fecal contamination and can survive for a long time in wet or moist environments.

Dogs can be easily tested for giardia, but if a dog has no symptoms, it is less likely to be performed. Once a dog has had giardia, it can get it again and again unless the contamination source is removed. The more a dog comes into contact with other dogs or drinks from standing water, the greater the chance of picking up this parasite. There are medications to effectively treat this disease, but no preventative. There is a giardia vaccine that is not very effective and currently is not recommended as a “core” or standard vaccine.

If you have more questions about giardia prevention, testing and treatment, please contact your veterinarian.

    DDL Vaccination Protocol
    Vaccinate your dog

Let’s face it, nobody likes to get shots.

For the health and safety of everyone, DDL requires updated DHPP, rabies & bordatella vaccination.

Vaccinations are every 3 years, DHPP every 2 years, and the BORDATELLA vaccination is required every 6 months.

The reason is that we see much more Kennel Cough (Bordatella) or Giardia than anything else. We do accept titers within 5 years for those that have immune issues. Play it safe and vaccinate regularly. We suggest when your pooch hits 10 Years to reduce frequency of vaccinate as immune systems get increasingly intolerant.

If your pup is coughing, has diarrhea or showing signs of lethargy, KEEP THEM HOME and call us so we can take appropriate cautionary actions.

Do you know what your dog is eating?
    Cora from DDL

DDL provides only wheat-free foods, so your pets stay healthy!

With the current pet food crisis, we understand pet lovers and owners everywhere are concerned for the health and safety of their four-legged loved ones. Melamine, a highly toxic pesticide, has been detected in the wheat gluten of many pet foods across the country. Sadly, it was too late for a recall for some cats and dogs.

However, you can be rest assured that Downtown Dog Lounge, sells only wheat-free pet foods. Our in-house food is California Natural Chicken and Rice formula which is completely wheat and wheat gluten free. On that unexpected overnight stay for Fido, you can sleep sound knowing he won’t be in danger with our food. Also, our retail food lines, Innova, California Natural, Oma’s Pride, Timberwolf, Merrick, and Tripett are all wheat-free and some are even completely grain-free!
