February 13th - 7pm - Norm's in Fremont

Join us at Norm's Eatery & Alehouse in Fremont on February 13th at 7pm for a Muttini Mixer. 10% of all food and $1 of select pints of beer go to ARF (Animal Relief Foundation). The more beer you drink, the more animals you help… That's our motto at least. Now that I think about it, that's probably how we ended up at Karaoke after the Norm's event in December. We helped a lot of animals that night.

Best of all, we’re delighted to welcome new Salon Manager and Grooming Coordinator, Amandra Poitras, to the DDL team! A Certified Master Groomer and member of International Professional Groomers, Inc. (IPG), Amanda comes to us with 14 years of experience. Additionally, for the last 18 months Amanda has worked at a veterinary clinic in Kaneohe, Hawaii, where she learned all about the physical well being of pets and how veterinary medicine works. She especially loves working with poodles and terriers, and while she doesn't have any pets of her own, she enjoys being "Auntie" to many furry four-legged companions.

There’s now a test available to determine the breeds that make up your beloved mutt. It’s a simple blood test called the Wisdom Panel. Based on DNA technology, it can detect over 100 breeds. While there are some breeds that it can’t identify, these are usually rare breeds (such as the Kuvasz).

The dog must have a certain percentage of one breed (at least 25%) or the test may come back with inconclusive results. But it can also pick up trace breeds. The testing company sends back a report with a list of the breeds detected. Results also include historical background as well as physical and behavioral traits associated with each breed. This information can be helpful when determining the likelihood of certain diseases (such as hip dysplasia) and behaviors like herding.

Puppies always have a harder time with potty training when it's cold and raining out. Here are a couple of things you could do to help your pup stay on the right track through this cold weather.

  1. Get your dog a nice warm jacket. Put it on each time you take your pup out.
  2. Walk as far away from the door as possible. It's best if the door is completely out of sight.
  3. If it's raining you can try holding an umbrella over their head. This will scare some dogs so really watch your dog's reaction to this. If they are scared stop using it.

If you've tried all of this and your pup still doesn't go outside after 10 minutes, it's ok to go back inside but your pup must go in a crate. This way they don't even get a chance to have an accident inside. After 5 to 10 minutes let your pup back out of the crate and right back outside. Give lots of praise and even a treat when your puppy does go outside. Repeat these steps until your puppy goes outside. Then it's ok to let them inside but only when you can closely supervise.
