Interview with DDL's Trainer Cora
Wittekind |
 |
DDL: Cora tell us about yourself Cora: I was born in
Illinois but grew up in Quilcene, WA. a small rural town on the Olympic
Peninsula. My mother worked in wildlife rehabilitation so we always had
raccoons, squirrels and deer around the house. I was trained at the
Academy of Canine Behavior where I learned how to work with dogs with
aggression with other behavioral issues. I'm extremely lucky that I could
make my passion my career. I have two dogs of my own; Shooter who is a 6
mo. old dachshund puppy, and Alice (my little lady!) who is a 2 yr old
chow/cattle dog mix. DDL: What's it like working at
DDL? Cora: I love working at the Downtown Dog Lounge. We offer
many different options for training including one-on-one sessions at
client's houses, puppy socialization classes, behavior modification,
training with daycare or boarding visits. Let me know what your problem is
and I'll do my best to help you and your pup out!

Cora's Training Collar Recomendations |
 |
There
are many different types of training collars for your dog and it's
important to choose the right one for you and your pooch! Before using any
of these collars please contact a professional trainer to learn the proper
usage and fitting.
Prong Collars (aka Pinch Collars):
Cora recommends using this collar for thick-necked dogs that are learning
to not pull or jump on lead. Although it may turn a lot of people off from
the look of it, when used correctly, this is actually one of the safest
training collars. Like any tool, if used incorrectly it may cause harm to
your dog. Good behaviors learned on the prong collar can be transferred to
a milder collar. This is a collar that safely lets the owner remain (or
regain) control over their dog while training.

Intestinal Parasites
Many people think if
their dog has worms they will see something in the stool. This is not
necessarily the case. Often, parasites shed only eggs, (which is what we
check for in the fecal test). Worms are occasionally seen in the stool
with the naked eye, especially tapeworms. These often look like rice or
sesame seeds and are segments of the tapeworm. Tapeworms are often
contracted by fleas. The life cycle is completed when a dog ingests a flea
(while grooming). The parasite lives in the stomach of the flea, and
enters the dog's digestive system and hooks to the wall of the intestine.
The best way to prevent tapeworms is to use a monthly flea
preventative

Other
types of worms and parasites can be picked up from the soil where other
dogs have defecated. Dog parks are prime transmission sites where a
rolling ball picks up eggs, and then possibly infects a dog when he picks
it up in his mouth. Some dogs frequently eat feces, and of course, these
dogs run a greater risk of being infected with parasites. Monthly
dewormers can reduce parasite infections and are a good idea if your dog
is in contact with a lot of dogs or goes to popular dog places. Some of
these dewormers also have a flea preventative to make life easy. They are
easily administered in a chewable form. It is recommended to talk to your
vet to see what can be done to prevent and control parasites, and what
type of habits may expose your dog to picking up worms.

business. Later she began her teacher training program in Seattle,
Washington. While honing her yoga teaching skills, Brenda studied animal
massage which led her to combine many things she loves and develop her
