Halloween can be a SCARY time for us all… BOO! With the rainfall picking up here in Seattle and the temperatures fluctuating wildly, your pooch has to deal with more than just ghosts and goblins - infectious organisms that cause respiratory problems LOVE all the standing water!!

'Kennel Cough' is the term applied to the most prevalent upper respiratory problem in dogs. It’s a bit of a mouthful, but the term Tracheobronchitis is more useful as it describes what is actually happening to the dog’s airways. Tracheobronchitis will affect a very high percentage of dogs in their lifetime. Parainfluenza and Bordetella most commonly appear together in infectious Tracheobronchitis, creating a disease that normally lasts from 14-20 days.

How do I know if my pooch has this Tracheobronchitis stuff? Well, the most common symptom is a dry cough with retching. Sometimes your dog might even sound a bit goose-like with a “honking sound.” Funny? YES! But this should signal you to a possible “doggie cold.” Typically the disease is much like a human cold and passes without much incident. In young puppies and much older dogs, however, symptoms can progress to fever, loss of appetite and pneumonia.

How can I protect my dog from this type of infection? Well, there is a “vaccine” that is given by squirting some gel into your dog’s nose!! However, unlike many human vaccines, this watery splash into the nostril does not prevent “kennel cough”… instead, it reduces the severity of the symptoms. Think of it as giving your pal the chicken soup and TLC before the infection hits!

What should I do if my dog has these symptoms? Consider visiting your veterinary doctor if your dog stops eating, has a significant reduction in energy level, or seems to have dry eyes and mouth surfaces. With many mild cases, no antibiotic therapy is even needed. However, if you have ANY question, you should always check with your pet doc!

This may all seem a bit spooky, but with a little vigilance (including proper intra-nasal vaccination) your dog should be fine this season, even if he/she comes down with a bit of the canine sniffles!

*For the protection of all of our four-legged friends, the Downtown Dog Lounge requires intra-nasal Bordetella vaccination every 6 months.

If your pooch wants treats for Halloween, they better learn a new trick! This trick may have a variety of commands: “play dead” or “bang-bang,” for example. I use the word “pop.” It’s a fun trick to add to the repertoire and show off for guests.

Start by getting your dog down. Our first little goal is to get the dog to roll onto a relaxed hip. You can lure your dog into this position with a treat in front of the nose, moving it slowly toward the dog and side-to-side until your dog relaxes on one hip. After this goal is accomplished, move your hand with food (this is called a "lure") across the muzzle and over the shoulder- towards the relaxed hip so your dog will look back towards the hip. As he follows toward the hip, raise slightly so he softly slumps/falls onto his side. Then quickly bring food parallel to floor and mouth - and reward.

When your dog appears comfortable getting into the "dead" position… THEN put the verbal cue in BEFORE you begin to move. As you progress, mess around with how much you can safely decrease your distance and physical signal. I put the cue with two pointed fingers (classic finger-like-gun position) so there is a little prop to add to the trick - I placed the treat between the tips of my "gun-fingers" to get my dog used to the shape and movement. The big key here is to keep playing around with it and remember, it is supposed to feel clumsy the first few times for everybody who has just started learning something new. It gets better. Of course if you need help fine tuning tricks, raising the bar in your obedience, or if you need professional help with major or minor behavioral issues, schedule an appointment here and I will be happy to share my expertise.

Check out Adam teaching Marley this trick on our flickr page! and the completed trick here!
